A number that never moved
The basketball rim sits 10 feet (3.05 metres) off the floor, and it has stayed there since the game was invented in 1891. Through a century of taller, more athletic players, the height has never officially changed — a remarkable constant for any sport.
The accidental choice
The reason is almost mundane. When James Naismith invented the game at a Springfield, Massachusetts gym, he nailed peach baskets to the lower rail of the running track that circled the hall. That rail happened to be 10 feet up. The most famous number in basketball is really just the height of a balcony.
Why it was never raised
It is often argued the rim should be raised as players get taller, but it has always stayed put. Ten feet still rewards a blend of skill, timing and leaping rather than pure height, and changing it would break every record and every comparison across eras. Tradition, and fairness to history, won.
The peach-basket detail
Naismith’s first baskets even had their bottoms intact, so someone had to fetch the ball after every score — until people got tired of it and cut the bottoms out. A game now defined by pace and scoring began, quite literally, by climbing a ladder after each basket.
