The role in one sentence
A defensive midfielder is the player who sits just in front of the back line, shielding the defence and setting the tempo of a team's play. Often called the number 6, or the holding midfielder, they are the link between defence and attack — the first line of protection when the ball is lost and, frequently, the first pass when it is won. It is one of football's most important and least glamorous jobs.
Screening the defence
The primary duty is to protect the space in front of the centre-backs. When the opposition attacks through the middle, the number 6 blocks passing lanes, tracks runners into the box and makes the tackle or interception that snuffs out danger before it reaches the defence. Good positioning matters more than pace here: the best hold their spot, read the play, and are always in the way of the opponent's most dangerous pass.
Destroyer or deep playmaker
Not all number 6s are alike. Some are 'destroyers' — combative, tackle-hungry ball-winners whose job is to break up play and hand possession to more creative teammates. Others are deep-lying playmakers who sit in the same zone but dictate the game with their passing, spraying the ball around from the base of midfield. Many modern sides want both qualities in one player, which is why the elite number 6 is so rare and so prized.
Starting the attack
The role is not purely defensive. Because the number 6 receives the ball so often from the defenders, they set the rhythm of everything that follows — playing quickly to spring an attack or slowing things down to keep possession. A team that cannot get the ball cleanly through this position struggles to build at all, which is why so many managers regard a reliable holding midfielder as the foundation of the whole side.
Why every top team needs one
Leave the space in front of the defence unguarded and even the best back line gets exposed to runners and through-balls. A quality number 6 makes the entire team more solid without the fans always noticing — the interceptions that never become attacks, the fouls that stop a counter, the simple passes that keep the ball. It is the position that best rewards intelligence over spectacle, and the one great teams are almost never without.
