What is xA (expected assists)? Measuring chance creation

The idea in one sentence
Expected assists, or xA, measures the quality of the chances a player creates for others. When a pass leads directly to a shot, that pass is given the same value as the shot's expected goals — the probability that the chance is scored. Add up those values across a match or a season and you have a number that captures how dangerous a player's passing is, whether or not a teammate actually finishes the chances they are handed.
How a pass gets its number
The value comes from the shot the pass creates. If a player slides a teammate through on goal for a chance worth 0.4 expected goals, that pass is worth 0.4 xA, regardless of whether the shot goes in. A cross to a difficult header worth 0.05 earns 0.05. A player's xA for a game is the sum of the values of every shot their passes set up, so consistently creating high-quality chances produces a high xA even when the finishing lets them down.
Why it beats the assist count
An assist depends on a teammate scoring, which the creator cannot control. A perfect pass that sets up a certain goal earns nothing in the assist column if the striker misses, while a hopeful ball that deflects in for a scrappy goal counts fully. xA strips out that luck. It rewards the act of creation itself, so a playmaker who carves out great chances week after week is recognised even during a spell when their teammates are wasteful in front of goal.
How to read it sensibly
Like all expected metrics, xA is most reliable over many matches, not one. A single game can be distorted by one glorious chance or a quiet afternoon. Compared over a season, a gap between a player's assists and their xA is informative: far more assists than xA suggests lucky finishing that may not last, while far fewer suggests a creator being let down who is likely to see their assist numbers rise as variance evens out.
Where you will see it
xA appears throughout modern scouting and analysis, especially when judging attacking midfielders, wingers and full-backs whose job is to create rather than score. It pairs naturally with xG: xG rates the finisher, xA rates the supplier. Read together, the two give a fuller picture of who is genuinely driving a team's attack, beyond the raw goal and assist totals that a single fortunate or unlucky moment can distort.
