Ronaldo Nazário: the phenomenon who fell and rose again

Before there was a Cristiano, there was simply Ronaldo — the Brazilian they called O Fenômeno, the Phenomenon. In the late 1990s he was a new kind of centre-forward: built like a heavyweight but moving like a winger, blending raw power with the close control and speed of a much smaller man. When Ronaldo ran at defenders from the halfway line, they didn't just lose the ball; they seemed to lose their bearings. He looked, for a while, unstoppable.

The talent was undeniable and instantly rewarded. He won the Ballon d'Or in 1997 at just 21, tearing through defences at Barcelona and then Inter Milan. He scored goals that looked impossible — solo runs where he beat four or five men before finishing calmly. Football had produced prodigies before, but rarely one who combined this much strength, speed and finishing in a single body. He seemed set to become the greatest striker the game had ever seen.

Then his body broke. A series of catastrophic knee injuries around the turn of the millennium — including a horror rupture that required painstaking surgery and years of rehabilitation — threatened to end his career entirely. There were moments when it seemed the Phenomenon might never truly play again, his explosive style the very thing his fragile knees could no longer support. For a talent that vast, it looked like a tragedy in the making.

But the story didn't end there. At the 2002 World Cup, Ronaldo returned and produced one of sport's great acts of vindication, scoring eight goals — including both in the final — to win Brazil the trophy and himself the Golden Boot. He collected another Ballon d'Or that year. He would never quite move the same way again, but he didn't need to. Ronaldo's legend isn't only about how devastating he was at his peak — it's about a man who came back from the brink to win the biggest prize of all.
