Two up, then held: Rennes stun PSG before the storm arrives

Rennes 2-2 PSG had a bit of everything, and for 45 minutes it belonged entirely to the hosts. With just 31% of the ball, Rennes led 2-0 — Sebastian Szymański on nine minutes, Esteban Lepaul on 38 — a ruthless return on rare chances against a side that would go on to dominate every territorial number.

The second half was a different game. PSG threw on Ousmane Dembélé and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia at the break and turned the screw: 69% possession, 19 shots, ten corners to Rennes’ none, and 1.91 xG. Wave after wave broke on the Rennes box, and it was only a matter of time before the pressure told.

It told through Ferran Torres. He struck on 71 and again on 82, both from Fabián Ruiz assists, hauling PSG level and sparing them a damaging away defeat. Given the second-half siege, a point was the least their pressure deserved — but they had to survive their own slow start to claim it.

Rennes will rue not holding on, but taking two goals off PSG on 31% possession is a night to build on. PSG escape with a draw and a warning: dominate the ball all you like, but concede early and you invite exactly this kind of scare. A fair 2-2, and an entertaining one.
