Mbappé's hat-trick turns a Bernabéu mismatch into a statement
Three touches of class, one obvious story
Real Madrid beat Real Sociedad 4-1, and the box score can be read as a single name: Kylian Mbappé, scorer on 40, 60 and 80 minutes. His hat-trick was almost metronomic — one before the break, one just after the hour, one to finish the visitors off — and it gave a comfortable home win the shape of a personal showcase. Vinícius Júnior added the fourth of Madrid's goals on 68 minutes, but the night belonged to the France striker, whose movement and finishing turned Madrid's territorial control into a scoreline that actually reflected it.
A hat-trick built on Madrid's midfield
What makes the treble instructive is that no two goals came the same way. Federico Valverde teed up the opener on 40 minutes; Jude Bellingham supplied the second on 60; Vinícius, having scored his own, turned provider for the third on 80. Bellingham was involved in two of the four goals, threading the pass for Mbappé and then for Vinícius on 68. Mbappé's job was to be in the right place and finish cleanly, and he did it three times — the reward for a forward playing behind a midfield that kept manufacturing chances at will.
The gap the 4-1 understates
This was not a smash-and-grab. Madrid generated an expected-goals figure of 3.14 to Real Sociedad's 0.57, out-shot the visitors 20 to 10, and landed 11 shots on target to just 3. Fourteen of those shots came from inside the box. Real Sociedad's goalkeeper made seven saves and still conceded four; at the other end Madrid's keeper was barely troubled, needing only two stops. Luka Sučić's equaliser on 44 minutes briefly made it 1-1, but the underlying numbers say Sociedad were being pinned back long before and long after that moment.
Form lines pointing in opposite directions
The result extended two very different runs. Madrid have now won five in a row; Real Sociedad have lost five straight, shipping goals in every one. A Brahim Díaz effort was disallowed for offside at 90 minutes, which would have made it five — a fitting near-footnote to a game Madrid could have won by more. For all the talk of a title race, an evening like this is a reminder of what Madrid look like when a finisher of Mbappé's level converts the chances a dominant side creates: routine, ruthless, and over well before the whistle.
