Four goals, a late leveller: Newcastle and Liverpool trade blows to a 2-2

Newcastle 2-2 Liverpool had lead changes, a stoppage-time equaliser and eight yellow cards between them. Liverpool ran up 2.23 xG from 27 shots to Newcastle’s 1.42, but St James’ Park refused to hand them the win. It was chaotic, physical and, by the end, thoroughly earned by both.

Anthony Elanga stunned Liverpool inside five minutes, and after Cody Gakpo levelled on 55, Joe Willock restored the home lead just two minutes later from a Yoane Wissa assist. For an hour Newcastle rode the noise, the fouls and the momentum — five yellow cards is what it costs to play a night like this on the front foot.

Liverpool laid siege late, and it told: Dominik Szoboszlai levelled in the 90th minute to rescue a point. Given the shot count and the xG gap, a draw was the least Liverpool’s pressure deserved — but it took until the last kick, and it took surviving a Newcastle side that threw everything into the fight.

Liverpool will point to 27 shots and argue they should have won; Newcastle will point to leading twice and argue they should not have been pegged back. Both are right, which is usually the sign of a proper contest — and a 2-2 that neither set of fans will forget in a hurry.
