0.10 xG, two goals: Napoli’s smash-and-grab at Genoa

Napoli won 2-0 at Genoa having generated an expected-goals figure of 0.10 — and not a single shot from inside the box. Genoa, by contrast, had nine shots, six of them in the area, for 0.58 xG. On chance creation this was Genoa’s game by a distance. On the scoreboard it was 0-2. Both facts are true, and the gap between them is the point.

Genoa controlled the game they wanted — 52% possession, the box entries, the corners — but could not force the ball past Napoli’s keeper. For 80 minutes it was the familiar tale of pressure without a cutting edge: plenty of approach play, no end product, and a defence that stayed calm because it was never truly breached.

Then Kevin De Bruyne decided it from nothing. He struck on 82 and turned provider for Antonio Vergara on 87 — two late blows manufactured out of a game in which Napoli had barely threatened. With zero shots inside the box, Napoli’s goals came from individual quality, not sustained pressure. That is the difference a De Bruyne buys you.

Napoli will not care that 0.10 xG says they were second best; three points are three points, and elite squads win the games they do not dominate. But Genoa should take heart from the underlying numbers — 0.58 xG and six box shots is a performance that earns points more often than not. This time it earned nothing.
